Nepali President and President-elect Joko Widodo has called on Nepali citizens to return to the United States to help rescue foreign workers.
In a statement released on Friday, Widodo said: “I ask you to come to Nepal and help rescue the Nepali workers, their families, and the communities who have lost their lives in the construction industry in the United Kingdom.
I call upon all Nepali and foreign workers to return home.”
In January, Nepali Prime Minister Sushil Koirala said that the country would take the necessary measures to repatriate foreign workers and that the government would issue visas for them.
The government also said that it would issue “further guidance” on the matter to help Nepali employers comply with the law.
The Nepali government has been facing a shortage of Nepali construction workers since last year.
The United States is seeking to use its economic power to help alleviate the crisis.
Last week, the Trump administration approved $50 million in aid for Nepal to hire and train Nepali laborers.
