India’s population of over 1 billion people is expected to grow by nearly 2 billion over the next 10 years, the government has said.
The number of people living in urban areas, such as cities and towns, has increased by more than 2 billion, the country’s new data showed.
The government said the total number of households rose by 7.4 billion from 8.4 trillion in 2015 to 8.8 trillion in 2019.
The government’s latest data shows the number of urban households has increased from 7.8 billion in 2015-16 to 8 billion in 2019-20.
More than 7 billion people are living in rural areas, which include areas in the northern states of Gujarat and Maharashtra.
The country has recorded a massive rise in cases of diarrhoea since the start of the pandemic in 2015.
Nearly two million people in India contracted the virus during the pandemics.
